摘 要
本文意在解读美国著名恐怖小说家埃德加·爱伦·坡的名篇《厄舍房屋的倒塌》中哥特元素的体现。全文分五个部分,第一部分是介绍；第二部分阐述哥特一词的来源与定义，使读者对哥特文学的历史背景和文体特色有个大致的了解；第三部分介绍埃德加·爱伦·坡在哥特文学上的造诣与对其的贡献；第四部分详细分析《厄舍房屋的倒塌》这一小说里的哥特元素；第五部分是对本文作出结论。本文将哥特元素分成了两个大类：传统的哥特式元素，即大多哥特文学作家所用到的哥特式元素，如场景设置，超自然现象等；埃德加·爱伦·坡独创的哥特式元素，即心理恐怖元素，如人物的人格分裂，第一人称叙事视角等。

ABSTRACT
This paper intends to interpret the Gothic elements in The Fall of House of Usher, which is a masterpiece of American horror short story writer Edgar Allen Poe. The whole paper can be divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. The second part explores the origin and significance of the term “Gothic” in order to give readers a general understanding of Gothic literature. The third part introduces Poe’s achievements in Gothic literature and his contribution to it. The fourth part analyzes the Gothic elements in The Fall of House of Usher in detail. The fifth part is the conclusion. Gothic elements in this short story are classified into two categories: one is traditional Gothic elements like the setting and supernatural phenomena, etc. which are used by many writers in their Gothic works; the other is Poe’s typical Gothic elements—psycho horror like split personality and the first person narrative perspective, etc.
